July 2017 - Weather Statistics!

A Wetter but Warmer than Average Month

(In comparison to Met Office climate averages)

Overall monthly round up:

RAINFALL

Firstly, the most notable piece of data to draw your attention to is total monthly rainfall. Clacton managed to accumulate a total of 83.3mm for July, exceeding the 40-60mm Met Office rainfall average from 1981-2010. The wettest day occurred on the 12th of July, which also wins the award for the wettest day of the year so far! Where 24.9mm of rain was recorded.

Wettest 24hour period of 2017:

It is also interesting to acknowledge that half of July's total monthly rainfall fell in a 24hour period, from the 11-12th of July totalling to 43.3mm, giving Clacton its wettest 24hour period of 2017. Rainfall rate for this period can be shown by using the latest WQRadar animation below.

TEMPERATURE

Secondly, July's temperature average for Clacton was 18.6C, suggesting a warmer than average month in comparison to the Met Office temperature averages for July 1981-2010 of >17C.

The hottest temperature recorded was on the 7th of July, where temperatures rose to 26.6C. The coldest recorded temperature occurred between 4:30-5:20AM on the 13th of July, the day after the wettest day of the year, where temperatures sunk to 11.1C.

WIND

Wind direction tended to dominate in a south-westerly direction for approximately 50% of the time and wind speeds averaged at 4MPH, with 30MPH being the highest gust recorded.

LIGHTNING

There were a few days of convective weather experienced throughout the Essex region.

The most severe bout of weather to affect our region this month was on the 19th of July. Where over 100,000 lightning strikes were recorded as severe thunderstorms, which formed over the English Channel, made their way across southern England in a north-easterly direction, towards Essex. Which also resulted in an accumulation of 8.9mm of rain for Clacton.
